Welcome to SailLakeCheney.com.  We are dedicated to the advancement of sailing on Lake Cheney, located near Wichita Kansas.

Sailing can be enjoyed by everyone, young and old, male and female, single, married or divorced.  It is a great family activity.  Sailing is very affordable. Once you have the boat and sails, the power of the wind is free.  Boats come in various sizes, types, and price ranges.  We advise you start in a smaller, older sailboat that is in good shape.  Learn to sail and upgrade your sailboat, sails, and equipment as your skills and interest increase.  Join a local sailing club, where you will find sailors who are eager to share their knowledge and skill.  They will help you learn the basics of sailing and may be a great source of quality sailing equipment when they upgrade.

Come check out the sailing community on Lake Cheney.  You will be surprised by the number of families involved in the sport.

Lake Cheney is one of the best sailing lakes in the Midwest.

Located 30 minutes west of Wichita Kansas at the west entrance to Cheney State Park, near the intersection of West 21st Street North and Highway K-251.

"Located in windy central Kansas, the lake offers excellent sailing.  In fact, national sailing regattas have take place at Lake Cheney.  It’s a breathtaking sight to see more than 100 multicolored sailboats on the lake at one time." - KDWPT Brochure

Lake Cheney is shaped in the form of a triangle.  Along the southern base of the lake is the dam with water depths reaching thirty-five to forty feet.  Sailing from the west shore to the east shore is a distance of about four miles and sailing from the base of the dam to the northwestern point of the lake is also about four miles.  The 9600 acres of surface water equates to almost 15 square miles of sailing pleasure.    In the summer the predominate winds come from the south with northerly breezes in the spring and fall.

There are numerous public boat ramps to launch your sailboat.  Or you can join the local sailing club or use the public marina to dock your sailboat when you are not sailing.

Fishermen, power boaters and sailboats all share the lake with other watercraft including jet skis and windsurfing.  But even on the busiest weekends, there is plenty of room for all to enjoy the beauty and fun that is Lake Cheney.
